Stock market today (May 19, 2026): Which are the top gainers and losers in BSE Sensex and Nifty50 today? Check list

Equity benchmark indices Sensex and Nifty ended lower on Tuesday after a late-session sell-off in heavyweight stocks such as HDFC Bank and Reliance Industries erased early gains, while concerns over the rupee touching a fresh record low weighed on investor sentiment. Elevated crude oil prices amid geopolitical uncertainties also kept markets under pressure, although strong buying in information technology stocks helped limit losses, according to traders. The BSE Sensex, which traded in positive territory for most of the session, fell sharply in the final leg and settled lower by 114.19 points, or 0.15 per cent, at 75,200.85. During the session, the index had climbed as much as 431.23 points, or 0.57 per cent, to 75,746.27 after US President Donald Trump said he had paused fresh military strikes on Iran following requests from Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the UAE, while indicating ongoing discussions with Tehran. "Domestic equity indices pared early gains to close in the red, despite an initial upswing fuelled by optimism surrounding a temporary halt in US military operations against Iran. "IT stocks stood as a notable exception, registering robust advances on the back of anticipated tailwinds from an accelerating rupee depreciation and compelling valuations," Vinod Nair, Head of Research, Geojit Investments Limited, said, PTI quoted. "Despite a powerful rally in IT stocks and supportive global cues during the first half, benchmark indices failed to sustain higher levels as rising currency concerns, elevated crude oil prices, and aggressive derivative unwinding dragged the market lower into the close," Hariprasad K, Research Analyst and Founder, Livelong Wealth, said. Broader markets outperformed headline indices. The BSE SmallCap Select index gained 1.39 per cent, while the MidCap Select index rose 0.93 per cent. Among sectoral indices, Focused IT jumped 3.25 per cent, followed by IT at 3.22 per cent, Realty at 1.35 per cent, Utilities at 0.67 per cent and Consumer Discretionary at 0.60 per cent. Banking and telecom shares remained under pressure, with the BSE Top 10 Banks index declining 0.55 per cent and Private Banks falling 0.54 per cent. Meanwhile, the rupee slipped to a record low of 96.60 against the US dollar before settling at 96.52 provisionally. Brent crude, the global benchmark, traded 1.80 per cent lower at $110 per barrel. Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) bought equities worth Rs 2,813.69 crore on Monday, according to exchange data. Adani Group stocks mostly ended higher after the US Department of Justice dropped criminal charges against Gautam Adani and Sagar Adani, closing the high-profile securities and wire fraud case in New York. Asian markets ended mixed, with South Korea's Kospi and Japan's Nikkei settling lower, while Shanghai's SSE Composite and Hong Kong's Hang Seng ended higher. European markets were trading in positive territory.
