Rajkot: A 35-year-old employee of a private firm was swindled out of Rs 2.59 lakh after being enticed by promises of lucrative stock market returns. The incident has prompted the victim Jaysen Mahabodhi to lodge a complaint at the B Division police station. On April 6, Mahabodhi saw an advertisement on Instagram promoting stock market investments. Clicking on the advertisement led him to a WhatsApp group managed by a person named Divya Shah. Shah, acting as the group admin, offered investment advice and encouraged Mahabodhi to open an account via a provided link. Mahabodhi downloaded an application and submitted sensitive information, including his bank details and PAN card, to set up the account. Over the course of several weeks, from Apr 23 to May 9, he invested a total of Rs 2.59 lakh with the app displaying a supposed profit of over Rs 12 lakh. However, when Mahabodhi attempted to liquidate his shares, he got a notification demanding a 24.1% tax on the total amount. Sensing something amiss, he sought advice from a share broker, who confirmed that the application was fraudulent.
