Sensex, Nifty slip from record highs, Kotak Mahindra, Adani Ports among lead gainers
The domestic markets slipped off their record highs as investors booked profits after a strong opening driven by upbeat GDP data. Sentiment turned cautious through the session due to weak foreign fund flows, pressure on the rupee, and uncertainty ahead of the RBI’s upcoming policy decision.
While fundamentals remain supportive, these near-term concerns prompted traders to pare positions, pulling the Sensex and Nifty back from record levels.
Sensex dropped by 47.03 pts or 0.05 per cent to 85,659.64 at 1.22 pm after scaling to a new high of 86159.02 in early trade. Nifty 50 dipped by 21.10 pts or 0.08 per cent to 26,181.85 after opening at a record high of 26,325.80.
Midcap index dipped, while smallcap index inched up to trade in green.
Bank Nifty traded at 59,700 level after hitting an all-time high of 60,114.30 in early trade.
On the sectoral front, a majority of them traded in the negative territory. Realty, consumer durables and healthcare stocks led the losses, while PSU Bank, metal, IT and oil & gas traded with modest gains. Auto stocks also traded in green, due to monthly sales data.
Top gainers & losers of Nifty 50
Kotak Mahindra, Adani Ports, HCL Tech, Eicher Motors and Bharat Electronics led the gainers of Nifty 50, while IndiGo, Bajaj Finance, Sun Pharma, Titan and Tata Consumer Products traded as major laggards.
Market breadth showed a mixed undertone, with 3,111 stocks traded overall. Advances stood at 1,371, slightly outnumbered by 1,638 declines, while 102 stocks remained unchanged, indicating a broadly negative bias.
M&M, Hero Motocorp, Adani Ports, Paytm hit 52-week high
About 82 stocks, such as Hero Motocorp, Adani Ports, AU Small Finance, M&M and Paytm, hit their 52-week highs, while 108 stocks, featuring UBL, Page Industries, Trent, Bata India and JSW Cement, slipped to 52-week lows. Additionally, 77 stocks were locked in upper circuits compared with 60 in lower circuits.
Wockhardt shares rally 18%, driving smallcap index
Under the midcap segment, Swiggy, Paytm, KPIT Tech, Hero Motocorp and Indian Bank led the gainers with 2-3.5 per cent increase, while M&M Financial, Page Industries, Yes Bank, Oberoi Realty and Fortis Healthcare declined 1-3 per cent.
Smallcap stock Wockhardt rallied over 18 per cent. Aegis Vopak, IEX, Cholamandalam Investment, Hindustan Copper and KFin Tech were other topo gainers, surging 4-6 per cent. Whirlpool shares fell 6 per cent. Neuland Lab, Kaynes Tech and Amber Enterprises also dropped 1-3 per cent.
