The founder and chancellor of Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT), G. Viswanathan, highlighted the institution's commitment to providing educational opportunities to underprivileged students.
During his address at the STARS event, which was organized by VIT's Universal Higher Education Trust (UHET) in Tiruvannamalai for the first time, Mr. Viswanathan emphasized the importance of bridging the gap in enrollment ratio between northern districts and the rest of the State.
He stated that despite Tamil Nadu's Gross Enrollment Ratio (GER) being 47%, which is above the national average of 28%, the enrollment ratio in northern districts of the State remained low, resulting in economic growth suffering in the region.
To address this issue, the VIT has established the Higher Education for All Foundation, which aims to uplift rural students in economically and educationally backward districts, such as the erstwhile North Arcot districts.
Deputy Speaker of Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly and chief guest K. Pitchandi distributed scholarships worth ₹28 lakh to 242 meritorious students during the event.
