Empowering Mobility: Andhra Pradesh Launches 'Divyang Shakti' for Free Travel

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu is set to inaugurate the pioneering 'Divyang Shakti' scheme on Wednesday, which promises complimentary bus travel to individuals with disabilities across the state. Announced as a special initiative to coincide with the Ugadi festival, 'Divyang Shakti' focuses on promoting social equity, enhancing mobility, and ensuring 'last-mile dignity' for all differently-abled citizens.

The scheme, a highlight in Naidu's inclusive policy agenda, is expected to aid over 12.76 lakh individuals, including 11.16 lakh persons with disabilities and their attendants. This makes it one of India's most extensive mobility support programs. Key elements include free bus rides within the Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC) services and a 50 per cent fare discount for accompanying attendants when traveling with eligible beneficiaries.

Implementation involves a significant financial commitment, with over Rs 207 crore allocated by the government. The scheme covers 21 disability categories, offering support to those with more than 40 per cent disability. As a testament to its statewide significance, MLAs will introduce the initiative in their constituencies, engaging with communities and participating in outreach activities alongside beneficiaries.
