Business & Economic Updates

  • India's GDP and per-capita GDP may fall in dollar terms in FY26 because the rupee is weaker, even though growth stays positive; a lower exchange rate is the main reason.
  • India's FDI equity inflows rose 18% to $58.84 billion in FY26, while US investments more than doubled to over $11 billion, making it the second-largest source after Singapore.
  • Rajesh Exports says SEBI's revenue inflation charges are a misunderstanding, claiming the regulator mixed up Valcambi EBITDA with revenue; the company says no penalty or final adverse finding exists yet.
  • Hardeep Puri will launch E85 fuel in New Delhi at Indian Oil’s Pusa Road outlet, with prices expected to be lower than petrol and rollout expanding to 5,000 pumps by 2027.
  • The Centre is close to 25% of its FY27 disinvestment target early in the year, helped by stake sales and asset monetisation; big transactions like IDBI Bank and LIC may drive more.
  • India set up 6 sector groups to identify 100 products for domestic manufacturing, cutting imports; groups cover pharma, chemicals, textiles, capital goods, energy, construction, defence civilian items & electronics.
  • PM Surya Ghar rooftop solar scheme will cover 7.5 million homes by December 2026, with 4 million already benefiting; it gives up to 300 units of free monthly electricity.
  • India will launch 6–7 free trade agreements by next year; 2–3 FTAs will start in six months, plus 3–4 more in 2027, covering 9 deals with UAE, Australia, UK, EU, US, Oman, New Zealand, Mauritius and EFTA.
  • Cold storages in India are overflowing with imported perishables like apples and avocados as Gulf cargo is diverted here because Iran-war shipping routes are disrupted, hurting Indian exports too.
  • India may overtake China in global GDP share at PPP terms by 2060 because China’s population and productivity growth slow, while India’s demographic and human-capital gains stay stronger.
  • FPIs sold ₹2.25 trillion in 2026, exceeding 2025's ₹1.66 trillion outflow; driven by a weak rupee, earnings concerns and geopolitics, with only February seeing inflows.
  • Indian IT sector's revenue hit ₹103 billion, but stock prices fell 34% as AI disrupted traditional outsourcing; global tech budgets shifted to AI infrastructure, slowing growth to 3-4% from 10-13%, delaying earnings recovery despite AI deals.
  • India's ₹20,000 crore credit guarantee scheme for MFIs (launched March 2026) is still slow; only about ₹8,000 crore utilised so far, with 80% cover for small MFIs, 75% for medium, 70% for large, to boost lending to 36 lakh small borrowers.
  • India fixed domestic aviation turbine fuel benchmark at ₹86.32 per litre to help airlines manage jet fuel costs, with city rates varying by taxes and airport charges.
  • Govt plans to expand flex-fuel vehicle and ethanol pump rollout, with 50–100 outlets in NCR and Mumbai-Pune-Nagpur, aiming about 5,000 outlets by end-2027.
  • ATMs in India are facing cash shortages, especially in some states, because loading has slowed and cash demand is rising, affecting DBT beneficiaries.
  • SEBI approved easier FPI access via SWAGAT-FI single-window gateway for low-risk investors (sovereign wealth funds, central banks, regulated insurers), cutting KYC to 10 years, unified registration, single demat for equity/debt, boosting foreign inflows.
  • The government is considering standard edible oil pack sizes to reduce price confusion and improve transparency, after industry bodies said odd sizes like 650g and 870g confuse buyers.
  • India is giving import substitution a leg-up by pushing local manufacturing, but the broader debate warns that such policies can raise costs, reduce competition and hurt exports.

Geopolitical Updates

  • PM Modi and Venezuela's Acting President Delcy Rodriguez agreed on a long-term upstream-downstream energy partnership; India (the 2nd largest Venezuelan crude buyer at 427,000 bpd) will diversify oil sources, invest in critical minerals, mining, pharma and agriculture.

  • US President Donald Trump said a ceasefire in that region means "shooting more moderately," not fully stopping fire, amid fresh US-Iran strikes and fragile truce talks.
  • India-UK trade deal is moving forward, but launch may be delayed by British steel safeguards and CBAM concerns; both sides say talks are continuing well.
