Shares of Indraprastha Gas Ltd are in focus on Monday, August 31, after the company raised its compressed natural gas prices in Delhi by ₹3.89 per kg over the weekend. With this price hike, the retail CNG price in Delhi is now ₹83.09 per kg. The price hike took effect from August 29.
The prices were increased to partly offset the sharply higher imported spot liquefied natural gas costs, the company said in a statement. Global LNG prices have nearly doubled since the West Asia crisis intensified in February. Disruptions through the Strait of Hormuz and higher European gas-storage demand adding pressure.
CNG prices in Delhi have gone up by 7.8% during the six-month Iran war, which began on February 27. The rise in prices has been compared till August 27. In comparison, the Europe Title Transfer Facility gas is up 105% and Asia Japan Korea Maker LNG is up 113%.
IGL said it will continue optimising gas sourcing costs to keep CNG prices competitive and ensure reliable supplies. The latest price hike by IGL will ease margin pressure for the company and improve its earnings before interest tax depreciation and amortization per kg, according to analysts.
CitiBrokerage firm Citi has a "buy" rating on IGL with a target price of ₹180 per share, an upside of 22.1% from its previous close. The brokerage said IGL's sharp 5% CNG price hike over the weekend appears to be a well-calibrated move, without meaningfully impacting volume growth.
All else being equal, the increase should lift blended realisations by 1.8/scm, helping arrest steady margin erosion seen over recent quarters, with the first quarter EBTIDA margin falling to a multi-year low of 3.4/scm, Citi said. IGL is not an outlier in raising prices but has simply lagged other city gas distributors in doing so, it said.
Ever since the October 2025 APM gas allocation cuts, all three city gas distributors — IGL, MGL and GEL — have now implemented cumulative CNG price hikes of 15-16%, Citi said. The brokerage added that near-term gas costs ma continue to remain elevated for city gas distributors due to higher spot LNG and continued disruption to India's contracted LNG volumes from Qatar.
