BSNL launches satellite phone for Rs 1.34 lakh, here is what makes it special

BSNL has launched a new satellite phone in India to help people stay connected in places where there are no mobile towers. The state-run telecom operator has introduced the satellite phone at Rs 1,34,166 (inclusive of taxes). Unlike a regular smartphone, the device is designed to work using satellites instead of conventional cellular networks, making it suitable for remote and off-grid locations where standard mobile connectivity is unavailable.

BSNL is positioning the satellite phone as a communication solution for places where conventional mobile networks cannot reach. However, this is not a gadget that anyone can simply buy and use. In India, satellite phones are tightly regulated, and users will need to get an explicit authorisation from the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) before buying or using the phone.

Unlike traditional phones that rely on nearby mobile towers, the satellite phone connects directly to satellites, allowing users to make voice calls even in areas without cellular coverage. This will make it particularly useful during emergencies or in locations where conventional telecom infrastructure is unavailable.

The company says the handset has been developed in partnership with global satellite network providers such as Inmarsat, enabling satellite-based communication across remote regions.

These include people working in defence, maritime operations, disaster response, mining, remote industrial operations, pilgrims travelling through isolated regions, and adventure travel.

Priced at Rs 1,34,166, the BSNL satellite phone is a specialised communication tool designed for mission-critical situations.

The company says individuals or organisations must first obtain approval from the Department of Telecommunications before purchasing or using the device. Possessing or operating a satellite phone without the necessary authorisation can lead to legal consequences under Indian regulations.
